Air & Fuel Setting on a Silvia From Drift Tengoku |
The most popular modifications done to a PS13 Silvia or 180sx is an S14 and S15 turbine swap. Upgraded injectors and air flow meters are a popular choice as well. The Nissan enthusiasts most often choose the Z32 air flow meter but Mr. Mikami discovered the RB20 AFM. This unit works up to 300 horses and can be acquired relatively very cheap at junkyards. | ||
The HCR32 AFM is a Perfect Match for a Stock S14 & S15 Turbine!
The limit for the PS13 air flow meter is right around 250 to 260 horsepower. Changing
the turbine to a stock unit off of a S14 or S15 can exceed the stock horsepower
rating. This is why the Nissan enthusiasts exchange their stock AFMs for a unit
off of the Z32, which can handle over 400 horses. However, these Z32 AFMs can
be very costly even on the used parts market and can be very troublesome to find.
Here, Mikami thought of another AFM that that might work for this setup. An AFM
off of a RB20 worked just as well as the Z32 unit and was very reliable until
300 horses. This AFM can be found abundantly and coupled with an Infiniti harness,
it can be obtained at fraction of the cost of a Z32 AFM. At the shop Three Up,
they have so far they have tested three vehicles with this setup with no problems.
But in order to make this work, ECU modification is necessary. In basic terms,
the data from a Skyline Type M will be mixed with that of a Silvia. This data
mixing mod is no different than a basic ECU reprogramming (Rom Tuning) and should
cost the same as that. "If you are going for more power gains with a larger turbo
in the future, the Z32 AFM is the best choice. But up to 300 horses, this is the
best cost effective method. " says Mr. Mikami. For a PS13, Three Up recommends
an S14 or S15 turbine upgrade, with a RB20 AFM package for a total horsepower
output of 300. With roughly 15lbs of boost, the vehicle should be more than enough
to toss around a small circuit. |

Summary
•An S14 turbine can be boosted at 1 bar with no problems!•Cheap and effective modification! •Parts are abundant! |
Mr. Takahashi
The parts needed can be acquired used for very cheap! I have no problems boosting either! |

Mr. Bushimata
I've always thought that the Z32 AFM was the only option,
but there was a better alternative! Since the unit is very inexpensive, I can
drive with assurance! |
Comparison!
OEM Z32 AFM vs. OEM RB20 Turbo AFM
Both the AFM have a 80mm diameter, and the couplers are identical in shape. The only thing different is the color of the seals. Be aware that the Zenki and kouki (1st and 2nd gen.) HCR32 AFM are different, the Zenki version fits the Infiniti harness. |
OEM Z32 AFM
|
OEM HCR32 1st gen.
AFM (RB20 Turbo) |
This is the wiring harness coupler for the AFM. This can be purchased at Infiniti for around 1000yen ($10.00). |

S15 Stock Injectors
These are rated at 480cc. Since these are stock, they are
sold for 2,600 yen each. ($24.00) |
OEM RB20 Turbo AFM
The OEM RB20 Turbo AFM is good for 300 horsepower and perform
well with the stock S15 turbine and stock S15 injectors. There is no way not to
get this parts since it is practically free! |
|||||
Stock S15 Turbine
The stock S15 turbine is good for 350 horsepower. But the stock S15 injectors are limited up to 300 horses. The peak power output for the S14 turbine is at around 300 horses. A brand new S15 and S14 turbine roughly costs 105,000 yen ($1000.00). |

Mr. Mikami from 3UP
For a huge aftermarket turbo, the Z32 AFM is the better choice. But for the S14 and S15 turbine exchange, the RB20 AFM should be sufficient. But be careful, a used AFM can be broken and the only way to find out is to test it. On the other hand, a used HCR32 AFM can be bought with chump change anyways. We at 3Up can provide tuning services for these applications. |
